Bakpak Durden is a self-taught artist from Detroit. Through extensive research, introspective examination, and an anti-disciplinary approach, Durden creates deconstructed films exploring human consciousness and Spiritual Existence, fusing narrative and visual elements of Baroque and Surrealist techniques. Durden is known for their large-scale murals, expressing a moment in dimensional motion and their relation to the communities the works exist within. In 2023, they painted the monumental mural, [Show Me] Where Ya From, heading into Detroit on the famous Woodward Ave. Durden’s work has most recently been presented in exhibitions at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI; The Stamps Art Gallery, Ann Arbor, MI; Galerie Camille, Detroit, MI; Reyes/Finn, Detroit, MI; MOCAD, Detroit, MI; Playground Detroit, Detroit, MI; David Klein Gallery, Detroit, MI; The Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, MI; Heron Art, San Francisco, CA; Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL; Paradigm Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, among others.
